Preparing your Quilt

Tips for Preparing Your Quilt

  1. Trim loose threads from your Quilt top, and press well.

  2. Clip any loose threads from the back of your quilt, dark threads may show through to the quilt front.

  3. Secure all seams, stay stitch around the outside edge on pieced borders to avoid seams opening.

  4. Please save any embellishments such as buttons or beads for after the quilting is done.

  5. If your quilt top or backing are directional please mark the top edge with a safety pin & note.

  6. To avoid wavy borders, measure across the width of your pieced top in three places, cut your borders to the average measurement, apply the border to the quilt edge evenly, easing in any fullness, repeat for the lengthwise borders.

  7. The 3 layers of your Quilt will be loaded separately, no need to baste or pin them together

Preparing the Backing

  1. Prewash Quilt Backing

  2. The backing and batting should measure 8" longer and wider than your quilt top. For example if your quilt measures 60"x 80" your backing and batting should be 68"x 88".

  3. If you are piecing your backing, use a 5/8″ seam allowance, press the seam open.

  4. Remove any selvages that are in seams

  5. When piecing backing to make a reversible quilt, go for a random look, it’s impossible to get the backing centred exactly to the quilt top.
